With a 9 - 6 home defeat to Devon the County's hopes of retaining the Channel League title they won last year disappeared. The team, considerably weakened by the absence of 5 top players were beaten by a strong Devon side.

31st July Tenby: Alastair Jones Wins Welsh Amateur
Alastair Jones (Radyr) became the Welsh Amateur Champion at Tenby where he beat Oliver Farr over 36 holes 3 & 1. Alastair was two up after 18 holes and kept his nose in front through the afternoon round closing out Farr on the 35th hole. He becomes the first player to win the Welsh Amateur and Youths' Championships in the same year.
Nick James (Wenvoe) just lost out 3&1 to Farr in the semi-final on Friday afternoon..
13 July: Team Handicap Championship postponed due to low entry
The County Team handicap Championship scheduled for Bargoed on Sunday has been postponed due to a loiw entry. It is hoped to re-schedule the Championship in late August /early September on a Saturday.
My apologies and thanks to the teams who did enter hopefully there will be a better response later in the year.
06 July: Glamorgan Players help Welsh to 5th in European Team Championship after Round 1
Pennard's James Frazer with a 2 under 70 and Vale junior Rhys Pugh with a level 72 helped Wales get 5th spot after day 1 of the European Team Championship in Sweden. It was a fine team per5formance that must have pleased former County Captain Carl Rowe the team captain. This was shown by the fact that, although Radyr's Alastair Jones score of 75 was the discard it was the lowest discarded score other than the leading team'sw 74.

Sunday 4th July: Michael Hearne wins Morlais Bowl
Michael Hearne (Southerndown) won the Morlais Bowl with a two-round total of 144 in testing conditions at Morlais Castle. Mike was 4 shots clear of fellow County players Chris O'Neill (Radyr) and Tom Rees (Creigiau). A fine performance by local player Rhydian Albert saw him joint second on 148.
The win puts Hearne one point in front of O'Neill at the top of the Order of Merit. CSS was 73 in both rounds.

Clyne 20/06: County Team returns to Winning Ways
Following the away defeat to Wiltshire and the draw with Gwent the team made home advantage tell with a resounding 10.5 to 4.5 victory over Somerset at Clyne.
Craig Melding (Neath), celebrating selection for the Welsh European Boys' Team returned both points.
Tom Rees (Creigiau) wins Gower Gauntlet
Tom Rees (Creigiau) kept up his run of form and followed up his second place in the Aberconwy Trophy with a win in the Gower Gauntlet. Tom's rounds of 70 and 71 wer just too much for County Junior Delon Hau who finished on 144 with Radyr's Chris O'Neill a shot further back in 3rd place.
Chris with 24 points leads the County Order of Merit with Tom second and Matthew Hearne (Southerndown) third
Three Players from County selected to Represent Wales
Three players from Glamorgan, James Frazer (Pennard), Alastair Jones (Radyr), and Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) have been selected to represent Wales in the forthcoming European Men's Team Championships to be held in Sweden next month.
They are joined by Rhys Enoch, Oliver Farr, and Ben Westgate all playing out of English clubs to make up the six-man team.
Successful Weekend for County Players
The first weekend in June proved successful for County players in GUW Order of Merit events.
Nick James (Wenvoe) won his first GUW Order of Merit event, the Aberconwy Trophy at Conwy and Maesdu. The success moved Nick up to 5th in the OOM Table. Two shots behind in joint second place was Creigiau's Tom Rees.
In the St Andrews Links Trophy Radyr's Alastair Jones finished 15th and James Frazer (Pennard) 19th in a very strong field. The performances can only have improved James' chances of representing Wales in the European Team Championships and at least put Alastair "in the frame".
Wrexham May 30th: Alastair Jones Retains Youths Title
 |
Alastair Jones (Radyr) retained the Welsh Youths title he won last year over four rounds at Wrexham. Going into the last round tied with fellow County player Gareth Phillips (Creigiau) and Jack Brooks (Pleasington) Alastair produced a superb 67 to take the title by 6 shots. After 3 solid rounds Gareth faded somewhat to finish tied for 11th place

Morlais Castle 04/04:Comfortable Victory in Season Opener
Richard Hooper captained the County team to a comfortable 13 - 2 win over Brecon & Radnor at Morlais Castle. The team of Channel League players mixed with debutants, including Leigh Ivory (Wenvoe Castle) built on the 4 - 1 lead from the morning foursomes only conceding one of the afternoon singles. Encouragingly junior Craig Melding (Neath), Mark Baird (Radyr) and not-so-junior Leigh Ivory had wins in both foursomes and singles.

Final Hurdle proves a Bridge too Far
The challenge of finishing the season on the highest of notes was just too much and Somerset inflicted the County's first defeat in the 2009 Channel League. The 8.5 to 6.5 loss was a disppointment on the day but shouldn't dtract from the overall excellence of a Channel League win.

Sunday 20th: County Win Inter - Counties by 34 Shots
With seven rounds in the 60's, including James Frazer's course record 63 the County dominated the Welsh Inter-Counties Championship last Sunday. The victory margin of 34 was incredible enough but the team performance is put into perspective by two analyses: 1) if the rules had been such that Glamorgan discarded the lowest score and kept the other 5 whereas everyone else kept the 5 lowest and discarded the highest we would still have won by 20 strokes, 2) the team score of 282 was better than the best 5 lowest scores am and pm of all other teams in the Championship! A team performance that must be unprecedented.
Team scores:
Richard Hooper (Neath) 67/66 133
James Frazer (Pennard) 63/70 133
Luke Thomas (Vale) 67/68 135
Gareth Phillips (Creigiau) 75/68 143
Nick James (Wenvoe) 75/66 141
Brent O'Neill (Radyr) 72/72 142
Sunday 13th: COUNTY WIN SEALS CHANNEL LEAGUE TREBLE
Gloucestershire's defeat by Cornwall meant the County secured their first Channel League title for over 10 years. If results had gone against us we could have lost out. However the team will be all out to maintain its unbeaten record in the last match against Somerset . All associated with the team and especially the Captain are "Cock a Hoop(er)" with the victory. Of course this particularly applies to Richie Evans as in many ways it is the "team that Richie built" that brought success, and Richie himself is still fully involved as a player.
With the U-16's winning their Channel League and the Seniors theirs it is a significant 2009 treble for the County.

Channel League - Remarkable comeback sees County defeat Glos.
Chipping Sodbury 30/08: The Channel League title looked a bridge too far when the team trailed Gloucsetershire after the morning foursomes 5 - 0. Whatever the team had for lunch (or the "hair drier" treatment from the Chairman) worked wonders and an 8 -2 margin in the singles meant the County triumphed 8 games to 7. If this isn't some sort of record it ought to be!

Luke Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan) wins Welsh Championship
02/08/2009. Luke Thomas the former Pontypridd player now playing at the Vale of Glamorgan beat 4th seed Rhys Enoch of Truro 3 & 2 to become Welsh Amateur Champion of 2009.
In the morning round Luke pulled back to go into lunch only 1 down. With some class play he then established a 3 hole lead only to lose 11 and 12 and his lead was reduced to 1. With an eagle on 13 and a solid Par on 14 the lead was back to 3, only for Luke to hit a poor drive on 15 - back to 2 again. Both hit tee shots towards the gorse on 16 but Luke's ball was found and Rhys' wasn't. Rhys was unable to overcome the mistake giving Luke the Championship 3 & 2.

Luke proudly displays the Championship Cup
Luke's victory is well deserved, after 2008 where Luke would admit himself that hewasn't playing to his potential he persevered, worked hard, and County coaching and fitness sessions through the period have helped him re-discover his form and hopefully another Welsh cap.

Radyr 31/05/06 Alastair Jones Wins Welsh Youths
After a tense last round battle Alastair Jones (Radyr) just held off the challenge of fellow Glamorgan player Nick James (Wenvoe Castle) and Curtis Edwards to win by 1 shot. On the green in two he left his first putt short and couldn't make his next leaving Alastair who had recovered well from an opening 75 the winner.

Richard Hooper (Neath) is new County Captain
After three years of exemplary effort Richard Evans of Langland Bay stepped down as Captain of the County. He is replaced by current County Champion Richard Hooper of Neath. Richard, a former golf bursar at St Andrews University who plays off +2, has been a regular in the County team for a number of years and gained his County Colours last year.
Richard is very keen to build on the improvements in team spirit and morale and to show that the last results of 2008 were not typical of what the team can produce.

Boys' Home Internationals Day 2:
Wales lose narrowly to favourites Ireland
Taking a 3-2 lead from the foursomes Wales Boys just lost out to Ireland when anchorman Rhodri Harston lost on the last: as the day before so near!
Day 1:
County players contribute to Wales holding England.
Debutant Jack Bush had a fine singles win and with Rhys Pugh & Patrick Mullins' wins in the foursomes to help the Welsh Boys hold England to draw on day one of the Boys' Home Internationals at Hankley Common. The match could well have been a Welsh win but Ross McLister lost the 17th to go down 3&1 in the last singles for England to snatch a draw.
Uncapped County Juniors Perform Well in Welsh Boys' Championship
That two Glamorgan Boys reached the Semi -Final of the Welsh Boys is nothing new (sadly that they were both uncapped by the GUW is also nothing new) so congratulations to Jack Bush (Morlais Castle) and Craig Melding (Neath). Craig lost in the Semi to the eventual winner (Christopher Nugent) but Jack repeated his South Wales Boys' victory over Michael Evans to reach the final where he gave Nugent his closest match before going down by 2 holes. Jack's success follows closely on his triumph in winning the South Wales Boys' Matchplay Championship. Hopefully these performances have put both Craig and Jack into the forefront of the selectors' minds when they pick the Boys' Team for the forthcoming Home Internationals.
Both Jack and Craig feature heavily in the County Junior programme and in fact if it hadn't been for the County funding Juniors below GUW Squad level Craig would not have received any coaching in the Winter of 2008/09!!
Junior Championship - Morlais Castle - July 1st
Ryan Thomas (Vale) is 2009 County Junior Champion
Ryan Thomas with rounds of 70 and 73 won the County Junior Championship with rounds of 70 and 73 for an excellent one over par aggregate of 143, beating fellow Vale of Glamorgan team mate Lewys Bishop by 2 shots to take the title. Another Vale player, Tim Harry was in third place also with 145.
The excellent condition of the course and (except for the almost oppressive heat) fairly ideal weather conditions produced some excellent scoring with the CSS being one under SSS for both rounds.
Remarkably all the first four places were taken with U/16 and, in Tim's case an U/14 player.
