The engraver need only put "2011 ditto" after Mike Hearne repeated his 2010 victory in the Castle Bowl. It is a tribute to the efforts and energy of the Morlais Club that the event attracted 78 entries - a record for an Order of Merit event. Of course it also shows that players find the challenge of the course attractive, and as it deserves this year's event was played in glorious Algarve type weather.
Ian Flower and Johnny Hoggett lead after Round 1 with fine sub-par 70's. Close behind were Mike Hearne, Whitchurch player Nick Hill and the Vale's Richard Williams.
The two leaders faded somewhat in the afternoon and as the day went on the golf improved with Morlais' Ceirion Jones, Creigiau's Tom Rees and Radyr's Chris O'Neill all producing sub-Par 70's to add to their first round 74. Unfortunately for them Mike Hearne also bettered his morning 71 with a 70 and a 141 total to take the title.
Although conditions couldn't have been different from last year's wind and rain, the result was identical with Hearne O'Neill and Rees again filling the first three places. Who says lightening doesn't strike twice????

2010 Champion is Mike Hearne of Southerndown with rounds of 74 & 70 for a two over par total of 144. This was excellent scoring considering the wind and rain encountered at Morlais on Sunday last. Chris O'Neill (Radyr), Tom Rees (Creigiau) and Rhydian Albert (Morlais Castle) all finishing two shots further back on 148.
The total of 67 entries iis a testament to the vigour with which the Club has promoted the event. Morlais, with it's greens in excellent condition showed the strength of the new lay-out and the general view was that scoring was extremely tough in both rounds. CSS being 73 both AM & PM.
