Clyne, hosting the County Championship for the first time, proved a serious test in difficult conditions. Ominously when driving down signs on the motorway proclaimed that the 11.30 Fishguard ferry had been cancelled. When the players arrived at Clyne they knew why. The flag was starched into the horizontal position by the wind. Having heard Sky & BBC commentators wonder how players will cope with winds that merely flap the flags they would have described the Clyne wind as at least Hurricane Force! However 70 players braved the conditions and the fact that there were no less than four 75’s attests to the quality of golf. Alastair Jones (Radyr) took the am Gross Prize from Andrew Gould (Bargoed) with past Champion Richard Hooper (Neath) and Clyne member Tim Rees losing out on count-back. So difficult were the conditions that no-one got within 5 shots of the Par of 70 or 3 shots of the SSS!
There was no let-up in the afternoon and, although some gave it best, the vast majority battled with the conditions to post scores that were slightly better than the morning. An excellent 73 gave Richard Hooper the pm Best Gross with Scott Bowman (Brynhill) retuning a fine 74 for runner-up.
The Champion produced two rounds of high quality, tying the best am gross but losing out on count-back and having best gross in the afternoon. Not surprisingly he was 5 shots ahead of local Clyne player Tim Rees with Radyr County player Brent O’Neill third and Brynhill’s Scott Bowman fourth
The Colts’ prize went to County player Jonathan Bale of Royal Porthcawl with 157. Radyr’s Alastair Jones was runner-up one stroke back.
Neath (Richard Hooper, Daniel Davies and Ian Edwards) with impressive performances from all three players in both rounds took the Team award by some distance from the home team (Tim Padfield, Tim Rees and Steve Hunt).
The CSS was 75 and Reductions Only for both rounds.
