Round 1 CSS 76 (SSS+3)
A stiff breeze and the threat of showers greeted the players for the first round when the Championship returned to P&K yesterday. Although the rain held off the course was not allowing much run and with the breeze the course played long and putting was not easy either. Surprisingly therefore it was a junior that lead the way in round 1; the Vale's Ryan Thomas put together a superb 72 in conditions that no-one found easy. Jordon Price-Davies of Glamorganshire returned the next best score of 75. Fancied players fell foul of the conditions and the difficulty can be judged by the fact that James Frazer (Pennard), one of the Welsh men's European Team had a 79.
Round 2 CSS 74 (SSS+1)
As the CSS showed conditions in the afternoon had eased somewhat and this was reflected in the scoring. Ryan Thomas couldn't quite maintain the form of the morning but produced a steady round of 75 to post the target of 147. Radyr's James Millard produced a 70 to add to his morning 80 to get near with 150 and this was matched by Jonathan Mason of Mountain Ash who also had a two-round total of 150. It was left to James Frazer to pose the greatest threat. He needed a birdie down the last to force a play-off, narrowly missing the putt and James had to settle for second on 148 after posting the low round of the day 69. It says a lot for James' approach that he put the disappointment of the morning round behind him to register such a strong challenge.
Ryan should take great satisfaction from his performance, not many Junior golfers become Glamorgan County Champion and those that do almost inevitably go on to finer things.
In the Team Championship Mountian Ash, Jonathan Mason, Rhys Carhart and Ian Flower produced six solid rounds to take the Team prize with Radyr (Kyle Davies, Brent & Chris O'Neill) just edging out Glamorganshire on the back 18 to take runner-up spot..
