COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2009

SOUTHERNDOWN GOLF CLUB 21/06/2009

Two sub-Par Rounds give James Frazer (Pennard) the County Championship with record lowest aggregate score in the history of the Championship.

Southerndown, as always, provided a test worthy of a County Championship, but with fine weather and only a breeze, and good true greens a good score was always likely. However that James Frazer produced the record low aggregate for the County Championship is testament to the quality of his golf.

Round 1 CSS 72

A number of scores below 75 from the early starters hinted at what was to come and James Frazer came in with a 69 shortly to be beaten by Alastair Jones (Radyr) who returned a fine 67 to take the lead. Reigning Champion and County Captain Richard Hooper (Neath) and Southerdown's Jon Holmes with 70's were both in the picture. Andrew Gould (Bargoed) had a hole-in-one at the 5th.

Round 2 CSS 72

In similar weather conditions scoring was again expected to be good and James returned a 67 to add to his 69 for a 136 score and the early lead. Alastair never recovered from a bad start and faded, the challenge was expected to come from Richard and Jon. However neither could better their morning round but Richard's 71 for 141 left him in Runner - up spot. Two consistent rounds gave Gareth Phillips 3rd place and on the back 18 Leigh Ivory (Wenvoe Castle) pipped former County player Andrew Gould (Bargoed) for 4th place.

James Frazer took the Colts' (under 21) Prize with Gareth Phillips (Creigiau) 2nd.

Two steady rounds by Brent O'Neill anchored Radyr (Brent & Chris O'Neill, Alastair Jones) to give them the team prize by one shot from Pennard (James Frazer, Ceri Llewellyn & Chris Cash).

Thanks go to the Southerndown Club for allowing use of their excellent facilities, and the members of the club for giving up their course on a Sunday. The success of the Championship depends on the co-operation of the Club and particularly the generosity of the membership.
