2011 Mid Amateur Championship

Vale of Glamorgan 15/09: Caerphilly's Paul McMullen had a golfing day in the sun to produce a 4 under Par round of 68 to win the Mid Amateur Championship. Whilst generally the field struggled to come to terms with the Lakes course Paul, who has played well in Order of merit events over the past year blew the field of 51 away as the winning margin of 6 shots demonstrates. With current holder Sean Davies (Wenvoe Castle) in second place on 74 and Creigiau's Mike Harmer in third on 75 it was a tremendous score. Rarely in the history of the Championship can the gap between first and second have been 6 shots.

The first cards in with 80+ returns set the tone for the day with players generally finding the course a tough test and many having one disaster hole to wreck what would otherwise have been a solid round. I don't recall so many 8's, 9's and 10's on cards in a Championship. An exception was Mountain Ash Mid Am regular Mario Roffi who was first out and returned a 76 net 72 that finished as 3rd best net score.

The COC of only allowing players to win one prize restricted Paul to the best gross prize although his net of 66 would have walked away with the net prize. This however then went to Whitchurch player Martin Brock who had a superb back 9 of 34 (net 31.5) for a 76 net 71. This would have been good enough for 4th gross. Mario Roffi was third (but took second net prize) with 76 net 72.

2010 Mid Am Championship

Pennard 16/09: One handicapper Sean Davies (Wenvoe Castle) with a round of 70 triumphed over a strong field at Pennard to become the 2010 Mid-Amateur Champion. More than most courses Pennard demands local knowledge and it was expected the player who overcame the strong challenge from the home club would do well, and so it proved. Sean beat Lindsay Griffiths from Pennard by two shots with Caerphilly's Paul McMullen (Caerphilly) a shot further back in third and Llanishen's James Gretton one back again in fourth.

Pennard is no doubt up there with the best, scenically and as a golfing test. So it proved with many players coming adrift in a number of places, with the 11th proving most difficult then the 9th, the first followed by 17. A par 3, two 4's followed by a 5 shows that every aspect of the game had to be overcome for success - just as it should be. Add to that a super day for weather with enough of a breeze to make scoring not a breeze made for an ideal championship. Thanks to the Club for accommodating us and providing a memorable day's golf.

With the two prize rule in operation although Lindsay would have been first net and Sean runner up it meant that James Gretton (llanishen) won best net, with Cotrell Park's "golden oldie" Chris Glenny second and Paul McMullen third.

2009 Championship

Wenvoe 11/09: Dave Clifford (Vale of Glamorgan), the former Bargoed player won the Championship with a fine round of 70. Unlike last year's close result Dave, who went out early, set the pace and no-one got within three shots of his total. With 2 under going out built up by two birdies and no bogies coming back in level Par Dave's round was consistentency itself. Runner-up Ian Booth the P&K team captain for many years was a shot lower out in 33 couldn't quite build on the momentum coming back in 41 finish 4 shots back on 74. Third place went to Kerry Morgan (Cardiff).

Best nett prize went to Simon Morgan Morlais, nett 71 with Kerry Jones (Cardiff) claiming second prize, rather than 3rd Gross Duncan Samuel was third with a Nett 72.

Overall the field of nearly 60 thoroughly enjoyed the ethnic minority (can't say Indian anymore) summer. As always Wenvoe, with its greens now recovering well, provided a stern test as the CSS of 74 (+2) showed.

2008 Championship

Radyr 12/09. Richard Williams (Neath) with a fine 71 became the County Mid-Amateur Champion. Ian's win means Neath players hold two of the three men's Championships and the Team Championship. As a Neath player also won the Individual Trophy at the Team Handicap Championship this is fine achievement by the Club.

Ian's win, by 1 shot from Peter Fortt (Cardiff) was achived in difficult conditions with Radyr, like many local courses suffering from the recent rains. They had left the course so wet that one player complained of Trench Foot at the end of his round! Many other courses being closed it was fortunate that the efforts of the green staff had produced a course that played as well as it did. Past County player Phil Derham (Pyle & Kenfig) was third, also on 72, with local Radyr player Meurig Phillips fourth with a 72. Phil was left ruing what might have been after a wayward drive on the 17th lead to a 7 and costing him the title.

Paul Hillman (Llantrisant & Pontyclun), one of the early starters was leader in the clubhouse for a long time and eventually took best nett with a 73 nett 67. Paul pipped Radyr's Ron James (also 73 / 67) with a back 9 of 31 against Ron's 34.
