The Grove Sunday October 4th:

Glynneath win Team Handicap Championship

The re-arranged Team Handicap Championship was completed at the Grove on Sunday and all teams enjoyed the fine conditions and a course that offered all a fair test. The Glynneath trio of Glyn Williams (71/67), Chris Loynes (75/63) and Colin Davies (91/72) enjoyed their "day in the sun" most with all three players finishing in the top 20 and, not surprisingly, Chris Loynes' 63 earned him the individual award too. When you consider that playing away from your own course is supposed to be a 1.5 shot disadvantage this is a truly remarkable score. Although they went out first there was no significant advantage between early and late starters all it can be put down to is a fine team effort.

Runners-up were Glamorganshire team of Dean Bezant (77/73), Dan Blatchford (78/68) and Mark Portlock ((84/70) on 211 with a team score of 211 just one over nett.

Third place were Tawe Vale with club captain Mike D'Angeli ((81/76), Richard Taylor (77/71) and Simon Rees (90/72).

Dave Barrell (Wenvoe Castle) with a sub-par round of 69, nett 66 was extremely unlucky not to take the individual honours.

The Glynneath team showed a refresing attitude towards tradition, although in the first group off, they made the long journey back to receive their prizes at the conclusion of the event. Thanks to them.

CSS was 70 (=SSS).

The thanks are due the Grove Club which not only proved, as always a superb venue for this competition but also was extremely generous in being able to accommodate the re-arrangement of the competition into its schedule.

Mountain Ash Saturday July 19th:

Fine Team Performance by Morlais Castle Wins Team Handicap Championship

Three extremely consistent performances by R. Albert, M. Healey and D. Thomas secured the Team Handicap Championship on a day of mixed weather at Mountain Ash. The event was held at the club as part of their Centenary celebrations. All players were extremely complimentary about the condition of the course. The scores reflected the toughness of the test with SSS going up 1 to 70. That all three of the winning team equalled or bettered CSS is evidence of the consistency shown by the team. Similar consitency was shown by the Wenvoe Castle trio of R. Williams, S. Cannon and J. Pulsford, who were extremely unfortunate that, on the day, their scores of 70, 70 and 70 were only good enough for second spot. The Pontypridd trio of D. Davies, M. Gough and E. Geisheimer took third place with a team total of 220.

J. Rees (Neath) took the Individual trophy with a fine 70 nett 65, just in front of M. Broadfield (Langland Bay) who had a 3ft putt for birdie lip out and had to settle for a 68 nett 66.
