07/12/2011 County Executive member wins BBC Wales Sport Award
Gareth Hughes of the Rhondda Golf Club was surprised when he was presented with the BBC Wales "Unsung Hero" award last week. Gareth won the award for setting up a highly successful junior coaching scheme at the Rhondda now attended by some 60 youngsters. It is a tremendous reward for the hard work put in, not just by Gareth, but, as I'm sure he would accept, by the Rhondda Club itself.
Hopefully Gareth's initiative will be successful in producing a number of County junior and Channel League players in the future. Just like the highly successful County coaching initiatives and similar schemes at Brynhill Pontypridd, Pyle & Kenfig have done over the years. There are many, like Gareth, who give considerable amounts of their time developing junior golf at all levels and are effectively "unsung heroes" too. BBC Wales has rewarded one of them, Golf has always needed such dedicated people but never more so than now.

18/10 Nigel Edwards Appointed English Golf Union Director of Coaching
All in the County will wish Nigel Edwards every success (other than against Welsh teams) following his appointment to the top position as the English Golf Union's Director of Coaching.
The appointment is fitting reward for Nigel's dedication to improving standards in golf, his remarkable record as a player and now as a successful Walker Cup Captain.
Nigel has been able to build on his reputation over the years with the GUW and this no doubt was a key factor in his appointment as Director of one of the foremost player coaching and development programmes in the world.
Glamorganshire 25/09: James Frazer wins Baffie
James Frazer (Pennard) produced two superb rounds of 69 and 68 to win the last Order of Merit event of the year at Glamorganshire on Sunday. His aggregate of 137 was 6 shots better than County Captain, Richard Hooper in second place with 143 (73, 70). Richard's Neath clubmate Craig Melding, also on 143 was third. CSS was 72 and 71.

09/10: Neath pipped in Inter-Counties
In a repeat of the Welsh Team Championship final Neath faced Newport in the annual Glamorgan v Gwent League winners' match at St Mellons.
Unlike the Welsh the match is "Channel League" format, with 3 foursomes in the morning and 6 singles in the afternoon. After the foursomes the teams were level 1.5 to 1.5. This was a fine performance by Neath as they had been forced to make a late sustitution. As befits two closely matched teams the singles also finished level 3 games each. Craig Melding faced Welsh International Joe Vickery in a sudden-death play off. Craig's birdie putt on the first shaved the hole, Joe, from a couple of feet nearer, holed and so Newport, for a record fourth consecutive year, won the match. A fine well-contested match between two very strong club sides.
Losing to Newport was probably a disappointment to Neath, but nowhere near as much as losing the Welsh must have been to Newport. All in the County wish the Neath team well in the forthcoming European Club Championships in Turkey next week.
15/08: Vale of Glamorgan. Great Round by Paul McMullen wins Mid-Amateur Championship
A superb 68 by Caerpilly's Paul McMullen gave him the Mid-Amateur Championship by 6 shots from holder, Sean Davies (Wenvoe Castle). Cregiau's Mike Harmer was in 3rd place a shot further back. The Lakes course was a stern test and certainly provided a worthy Champion. CSS was 74 (SSS+2).
The event was well-supported with a strong field, including for the first time a plus-handicapper and judging by comments would be even better supported if more clubs publicised it / players read notice boards!

11/08 Walker Cup - Rhys Pugh outstanding as GB&I regain Walker Cup
As hopefully many saw on BBC, captained by Whjtchurch's Nigel Edwards the GB&I team regained the Walker Cup after withstanding a final afternoon come-back by the US team with a final score of 14 - 12.
The Vale of Glamorgan's Rhys Pugh, at 17 the youngest player on either team played a vital role in the victory with three wins out of 3. In his opening singles match he faced world amateur ranked No 3 Patrick Rodgers; was 1 over par after 5 and found himself 3 down; which he turned round into a 2 & 1 victory. Then, in the foursomes with Ireland's Patrick Burns, he inflicted the only defeat the world's No1 amateur Patrick Cantlay suffered in the match and rounded it off by defeating Kelly Kraft the new US Amateur Champion in the afternoon singles to secure victory for GB&I. It was certainly a "Roy of the Rovers" performance by Rhys.
Nigel Edwards, as team captain, drew on all his experience and got the most out of all his players over the weekend. He knew his team was facing a US team that boasted 5 out of the top 6 in the world amateur rankings yet gave them the confidence to overturn the form book and return the Walker Cup, golf's oldest team competition cup back to GB&I.

11/08 Drawn match with Somerset ends Channel League season
Captain Richard Hooper paid tribute to the support of the players during his three years after the halved match with Somerset. Up 3 - 2 after the foursomes victory seemed in sight but the Somerset tail wagged a little too strongly and a 7.5 to 7.5 tie resulted. This gave Somerset the 2011 Channel League Championship so congratulations to them.
The season overall however has produced some promising new talent for new Captain Ian Flower to have at his disposal next year.

04/09: Return to winning ways
A new month saw the County return to winning ways against Wiltshire at Royal Porthcawl. Wiltshire may be the smallest County in the Channel League but currently they are very strong but a fine performance saw a 2.5 / 2.5 foursomes result turned into a 10.5 to 4.5 win with a superb singles performance. Junior players Delon Hau, Ryan Thomas and jack Bush all contributed wins against what was the full-strength Wiltshire team that recently became south West Champions.

27/08: Narrow defeat to Gloucestershire
The County gave an encouraging spirited performance against Gloucestershire at Chipping Sodbury. Unfortunately like all "spirited performances" it ended in an 8 - 7 defeat but the match was extremely tight and went down to the wire.
20/08: County go down to Devon
The County suffered another reversal in their quest to regain the Channel League, going down 10.5 to 4.5 to Devon at Exeter.

18/08: Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) selected for GB&I Walker Cup team
The Vale of Glamorgan's Rhys Pugh was the only Welsh player to make the 2011 GB&I Walker Cup team due to play the US at Royal Aberdeen next month.
Congratulations to Rhys on the selection: representing GB&I is possibly the highest accolade in amateur golf. It is hoped that Rhys enjoys inmdividual success and that the team, captained by Whitchurch's Nigel Edwards will similarly regain the Cup.
14/08: Neath add Welsh Team Championship to County Premier win
Neath overcame the strong Newport side to win the Welsh Team Championship by 3 games to 2 at Monmouthshire today. Congratulations to the Club, with Richard Hooper away on International duty, it was a fine team performance. Just the Europeans now for an absolutely unique treble!
07/08: County Leagues: Neath win Premier
Neath's 3 - 0 home win last week meant that, although Radyr could theoretically catch them on total points, Neath's superior game count means they are the 2011 Premier league Champions.
31/07: County in Shock Reversal at Neath
Fielding a strong team the County found Cornwall too strong at Neath on Sunday. When the dust settled after the morning foursomes we were 4.5 to 0.5 down facing a monumental task in the singles.
Although the afternoon saw and improvement it was too little too late and a 5.5 to 4.5 win was just not enough and a 9 - 6 defeat had to be taken on the chin. The best laid schemes of mice and men and all that...
Still all is not lost and if further reversals can be avoided the league is not out of reach.
28/07: Four still standing in Welsh
In a day when seeds fell by the wayside four players from the County are in the quarter finals of the Welsh Championship at Aberdovey.
Seeds James Frazer and Rhys Pugh are joined by County Captain Richard Hooper who plays Creigiau's Mark Baird, guaranteeing at least one representative in the semi-finals tomorrow.
27/07 Aberdovey: 11 Glamorgan Players in last 32 of Welsh. Holder surprisingly beaten
The County is well represented with 11 players in the last 32 of the Welsh Championship at Aberdovey. Unfortunately 9 out of the 11 are in the bottom 16 of the draw and the two in the top half play each other!
Last year's winner Alastair Jones (Radyr) surprisingly went out in his first round at the 19th. 3rd seed Rhys Enoch suffered a 5&4 reverse at the same stage..
10/07 Whitchurch / Newport: County players dominate Tucker Trophy
Mike Hearne (Southerdown) won his first Welsh Order of Merit event last week-end when his 278 proved just too good for Alastair Jones ( 279) at Newport. County Captain Richard Hooper completed a "hat trick" by taking third spot on 284. Jonathan Bale was a further 3 shots back on 287.
09/07 And Again to help Wales finish 9th
Both James and Rhys recorded victories to finish with 100% matchplay records and helped Wales beat Austria to finish overall 9th in the Euro Team Championship.
Well done to both
08/07 Dynamic Duo again help Wales beat Denmark
James and Rhys again recorded singles victories as Wales beat Denmark 3.5 - 1.5 to set up a match against Austria for 9th place.
Sad to report that England lost to the Netherlands, finished bottom of the GB&I countries, and now will have to pre-qualify for the 2012 Championships.
07/07 Frazer & Pugh help Wales Defeat England in Euro Team
James Frazer and Rhys Pugh recorded singles victories as Wales put the previous day's disappointing result behind them to record a rare victory over England in the matchplay stages of the European Team Championship.
The 4 - 1 victory surely puts Walker Cup places back into the melting pot as Wales took all four of the singles in what must be seen as a shock result. Wales now take on Denmark in the next stage
It is England that now have to win tomorrow to avoid the ignominy of having to pre-qualify for next year's Championship.
06/07 Second day performance leaves Wales in 16th
Although Rhys Pugh and James Frazer produced solid rounds of 72 and 73 it wasn't enough to stop Wales losing ground on all around them and finishing 16th after the strokeplay in the Euro Team Championships.
Wales now play England in the matchplay round with both teams trying rescue something from what has been a somewhat disappointing Championship so far.
05/07 Frazer best of Welsh
Pennard's James Frazer shot a 69 to be top GUW scorer in the Euro Team Championship in Vilamoura Portugal. Rhys Pugh, perhaps not yet back in the form that won him the Irish Strokeplay after his exams finished on 76. Wales finished 16th and have to make up 9 shots to have any chance of making the top flight after tomorrow's second round. But with only 4 shots separating them from 10th spot and 5 out of 6 scores to count there is an opportunity to finish in the top 10 before the matchplay.

04/07 Mike Hearne Opens gap at top of County Order of Merit

03/07 Mike Hearne wins Morlais Bowl from record field
The holder, Southerndown's Mike Hearne won the Morlais Castle Bowl with a two-round total of 141. The event attracted a record entry of 78, all of whom enjoyed the course and weather conditions. Mike fought off a strong challenge from Radyr's Chris O'Neill, Creigiau's Tom Rees and home player Ceirion Jones who all had afternoon rounds of 70 to finish on 144.
CSS(am) was 71 and (pm) was 72.

29/06 Bizarre Disqualification enough to get Matthew Phythian Hot Under the Collar
Rhondda's Matthew Phythian suffered one of the most bizarre (and some would say ridiculous) disqualifications at Rye in the Open Championship Local Qualifying round on Tuesday. Matthew, who made the long journey to Clitheroe in Lancashire for the first Qualifier and another to get to Rye and was half way round his first round (and two under par) only to get disqualified for having a temperature measuring device on his trolley.
Read the circumstances of Matthew's Massive Misfortune:
http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sports/golf-news/2011/07/01/the-bizarre-tale-of-the-young-welsh-golfer-the-thermometor-and-the-open-championship-91466-28974412/
It would seem the whole issue of artificial devices is becoming too complex with Phone Apps, watches etc having capabilities that breach 14-3 it is becoming impossible to keep pace. When it results, as it did for Matthew, in getting DQ (for what 99.999% of golfers would see as irrelevant reasons) perhaps it is time to sort things out. Why not, at worst, the same penalty as 15 clubs (2 shots per hole maximum 4)? Matthew made two round trips of over 250 miles each and had them completely wiped out by a an unintentional trivial aberration. Some years ago two professionals were DQ for having the wrong names on cards and since there have been others DQfor incurring penalties dicovered viewing slow motion replays and incurring penalties they have not put on the signed card. These have resulted in Rule changes. No doubt, as Matthew is an amateur his DQ will attract limited publicity outside Wales, and the Rule will remain , unjust as it is. Distance, elevation of approach shot, wind speed and direction all could give valuable advice but knowing whether it is 16, 20 or 22 (or in Matthew's case 31) degrees??
28/06 County Players fail to make it to Open Championship
The County players involved in Local Qualifying for this year's Open Championship failed to make it to Royal St George's. Jonathan Bale (Royal Porthcawl) was 3 over at Royal Cinque Ports and James Frazer (Pennard) 6 over at Prince's. With only 3 slots available from each venue and some 70 players at each, including Tour players like Marcel Siem it would have been a momentous achievement had either succeeded.
26/06 County Euro Players make Brabazon Cut
Making the cut in the Brabazon Trophy (the English Open Stroke Play Championship) is always difficult. The County's Euro Team members both did, the Vale's Rhys Pugh had a sub-par last round to finish on 300 and 34th place, James Frazer one behind on 301 in 43rd.
Two other County players made the cut, Jonathan Bale (Royal Porthcawl) was one shot behind james on 302. Radyr's Alastair Jones with a last round 76 finished on 297 but dropped from 9th to 23rd.
26/06 County beat Dyfed - Just!
The County played host to Dyfed at Maesteg and the Club, in preparation for it's Centenary year in 2012 provided the teams with hospitality second to none.
The match seemed to be destined to be a one-sided affair with the County taking the morning foursomes 4 - 1.
However whether the hospitality or the heat affected our players in the afternoon the singles went substantially Dyfed's way and ultimately we held on to a record an 8 - 7 win.
If the welcome, organisation, and turn-out by members and officials is anything to go by Maesteg's Centenary is destined to be commemorated in some style!
21/06 County Players make it through Open Local Qualifiers
County players Matthew Phythian (Rhondda) and Jonathan Bale (Royal Porthcawl) were successful in qualifying for the Local Final Qualifying for the Open Championship. Matthew made the long journey to Clitheroe and was involved in a 10 man play-off, Jonathan's score of 69 at Coventry was good enough to qualify in joint fifth spot.
In the Local Final Qualifying rounds Matthew is drawn at Rye and Jonathan will be able to get some tips from former Royal Porthcawl Secretary as he is drawn to play at Royal Cinque Ports. They are joined by James Frazer (Pennard) who has been drawn at Prince's. The rounds will be played on Tuesday 28th June. Good luck to all three.

Pyle & Kenfig 19/06: Ryan Thomas Storms to County Championship win
Vale of Glamorgan junior Ryan Thomas again showed how he likes playing in the big events and his two-round total of 147 was one better than James Frazer's 148. Ryan's success was built on a first round 72 whereas lust like with the Amateur Championship James' first round 79 left him too much to do, in spite of his low round-of-the-day 69. Radyr's James Millard added a second round 70 to return 150 to take third place on a count-back from Mountain Ash player Jonathan Mason. Jonathan joined team mates Rhys Carhart and Ian Flower to take the team title with Radyr second.

17/06: Alastair's Amateur Adaventure Arrested
The third last hurdle proved the stumbling block to Alastair Jones when his opponent Greg Paterson "came through a great battle fighting back to take the match with a win on the final hole" (to quote the SGU website).
From the Glamorgan Union a hearty "Well done Alastair a superb performance. Worthy of the Welsh Champion".
16/06 Alastair Progresses to Quarter Final
Alastair Jones survived two close encounters to progress to the last 8 of the Amateur Championship at Hillside today. Taken to the 24th by Finland's Toni Haluki, like Alastair at university in Texas, and then the 17th by Alex Johnson of the US. In the encounters Alastair certainly proved he had the stamina and concentration to survive testing matchplay situations.
14/06 Alastair Jones second best qualifier in Amateur Championship
Radyr's Alastair Jones was second best qualifier in the Amateur Championship at the Hillside and Hesketh courses today. Alastair followed his first round level par 72 at Hillside with a 3 under 68 at Hesketh. Alistair was one of only three Welsh qualifiers.
The three other County players in the Championship Rhys Pugh (151), Jonathan Bale (Royal Porthcawl) (153) and James Frazer (153) failed to qualify. James produced a good second round of 73 but with the cut at 4 over a disappointing first round had just left him too much to do.
13/06 Two Glamorgan players in GUW Euro Team
James Frazer (Pennard) and Rhys Pugh (Vale) have been named in the six-strong Welsh team to contest the European Men's Team Championship in Portugal next month.
Perhaps controversially the selectors have omitted current Welsh Champion Alastair Jones who has yet to show his best form since returning from his US University.
Chris O'Neill denied trip to China
Radyr's Chris O'Neill who won the British Universities' and Colleges Championship will not have the honour of representing BUCS after all. He has not been chosen to represent BUCS in the forthcoming World Students' event in China.
In what seems a bizarre selection (not to mention gender biased), the first three in the ladies' BUCS Championship have been chosen but no men's team is being sent. It is understood that in all other years BUCS has sent both men's and ladies' teams. Chris, as is his nature is quite philosophical about the situation.
Neath 14 May: Mark Lewis wins Neath Bell
Mark Lewis (Glamorganshire) who had a promising rugby career cut short by injury won the Neath Bell last Saturday. Mark's score of 147, after two consistent rounds was good enough to beat fellow County players, Radyr's Brent O'Neill and local Craig Melding by two shots.
CSS (am) was 75 & R/O for both Home players and visitors. (pm) it was 74 & 75 respectively

Royal Dublin: Pugh wins Irish Open Stroke Play
Last week-end Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) won the Irish Open Strokeplay at Royal Dublin after a three-hole play-off. Rhys went into the last round three shots clear but although coping with difficult conditions quite well found his last round 79 (total 294) meant a play-off over. With his opponent going out of bounds on the second extra hole Rhys put Rhys in control of events.

County open Channel League campaign in style
A solid team performance left County Captain Richard Hooper pleased with a resounding 10.5 - 4.5 victory over local rivals Gwent at Southerndown on Sunday. Taking a somewhat flattering 5 - 0 lead after the foursomes the team finished off the match with a 5.5 to 4.5 win in the afternoon singles.
Current Table and match details
16/17 April Mike Hearne & Rhys Pugh joint second in Trubshaw
Mike Hearne (southerndown) and Rhys Pugh (VOG) finished in joint second place in the Trubshaw Cup held at Ashburnham and Tenby over the weekend. Theie 72 hole totals of 281 was some way behind holder and Welsh Internationlist Oliver Farr (Ludlow). Rhys had also finished in third place in the Peter Macevoy Trophy held at Copt Heath earlier.
14/04: Chris O'Neill Wins British Universities Championship
Chris O'Neill (Radyr) won the prestigeous British Universities title over the West Lancs course this week. Chris, former County Champion and regular member of the County team, took the honours with a 4 round total of 290, winning the Championship by 3 shots. It is understood that he will have the honour of representing BUSA in the world student golf Championship in China later this year.
Frazer Runs Away with Duncan Putter

Welsh International James Frazer (Pennard) added considerably to his growing reputation by an impressive performance in the highly ranked Duncan Putter, hosted every year by Southerndown. Frazer had a brace of 65's in the last two rounds en route to a record low 72-hole total of 272. He finished 4 shots in front of the runner-up Andy Sullivan and 9 in front of fellow Welsh Internationalist Ben Westgate in third place on 281 .
2011 Opens with win at Llandrindod
The County team opened the campaign with a 10 - 5 win over Brecon & Radnor at Llandrindod Wells. Up 4 -1after the morning foursomes the afternoon singles weren't quite so comfortable a ride. However the cold wet conditions made it difficult to assess form so early in the season
Borth & Ynylas 19th September: County win Welsh Counties - Again
Following on from last year's runaway success the County again won the Welsh Inter - Counties Championship at Borth & Ynylas. Carrying a first round lead of 10 shots into the afternoon round the team managed to double it and finished the day 20 shots in front of second placed Dyfed. It was a superb team performance by Richard Hooper (Neath), Brent O'Neill (Radyr), Ian Flower (Mountain Ash, Gareth Phillips (Creigiau), Luke Thomas(Vale) and Craig Melding of Neath. County Champion Ian Flower's run of form continued and his 138 (65 and 73) earned him the individual honours by 4 shots with Brent O'Neill third a shot further back.

Wenvoe Castle 29/07: Seniors Rebound with Big Win
Following the defeat against Wiltshire the team returned to winning ways with an 11.5 to 3.5 victory over Somerset at Wenvoe.
The perfect start saw the County take a 5 to 0 lead after the morning foursomes. Although a couple of games were close it was clearly "back to normal".
The afternoon singles were closer but a solid performance ensured a 6.5 to 3.5 win, giving the overall result 11.5 to 3.5.
Although the size of win helps even victories in the two remaining matches may not be enough to get the league title back.
Tenby 25/07: Jeff Thomas wins South Wales Open Seniors
Jeff Thomas (Royal Porthcawl) produced two consistent rounds of 73 75 to take the South Wales Open Seniors' Championship at Tenby over the week-end. A high-quality field enjoyed the challenge of the Tenby course in relatively benign conditions. Jeff had to withstand the strong challenge presented by the second round 71 of Glyn Rees (Fleetwood) at bay, only triumphed by one shot. David Frazer (Pennard) was a further 3 shots back in third place.

Bowood Wilts: Wiltshire just too strong and Seniors lose again in Seniors' Channel League
The Seniors' team enetered uncharted territory in the SCL by recording their second loss in the season at Bowood on Tuesday.
As in previous losses the morning foursomes were lost, albeit narrowly 3 - 2. The afternoon singles were always going to be an uphill battle after Ron James had to give his opponent a walk-over after sustaining an injury early in the round. The final score of County 7 Wiltshire 8 shows the possible impact of the injury on the final outcome. However whilst other Counties are getting stronger with new "youngsters" we seem to be marking time at best. Winning the league will only get harder and harder if this trend continues.
Hopefully victory in the remaining three home games will help restore morale.
