An excellently presented Pennard Links saw good scoring from the field in the 2008 County Junior Championship.
Folowing the wind and rain of the past weekend, it was a pleasant surprise for there to be a light breeze in the morning.
This saw the 2007 champion Alastair Jones take the lead with a gross 71 with MiKe Hearne (73) and Oliver Baker (74),
his nearest challengers.
In the afternoon as the wind increased scoring became harder. In a compelling finish Alastair birdied the last two holes to join
Ross McLister (Cardiff) on a total of 146. As the rest of the field completed their rounds, it became clear that the
two players on 146 would need to be separated in a play-off.
With a large crowd looking on McLister and Jones fought it out over holes 1,2 and 3 and with both players hitting the first
and second greens in regulation it looked as if the stalemate would continue. However Jones found the greens tricky
in the gusty conditions and two three putts meant that he needed a birdie on the third to put pressure on McLister
and with that eluding Jones, it was McLister who emerged as the champion.
In the other divisions, Lloyd James of Radyr won the Ivor Nicholls trophy for the best overall nett score
with 140.
