To those who don't know Fairwood Park presents a strong test for golfers and so it proved again for the Championship. The players certainly found it as the winning 36 hole total of 147 shows.
The first round had three players tied on 73 and Cardiff's Oliver Baker added a second round 74 for a two round 147. However last year's Junior Champion Lewys Bishop (Vale) didn't give his title up without a fight and produced a second round 71 to add to his 76 to finish on 147 and retained his Championship after a play-off with Oliver. Welsh Boy's' International Delon Hau (Vale) was third on 148. It was also Deja-Vu in the Ivor Nicholls Trophy with Radyr's James Grainger producing two solid rounds of 77 and 75 off 8 to win the Trophy for overall best net.
James' gross of 152 won the U/16 Division with Llanishen's Jonathan James on second, and Rhys Jones of Mountain Ash on 157 third on count-back from Cardiff's Jack Hoskins and Langland Bay's Tom Evans.
The U/14 Division was dominated by the Vale's Tim Harry who finished overall joint 4th and above all the Junior Division players with a 148 after adding an excellent 73 to a first round 75. His 148 was 11 shots better than the Runners-up, Clyne's Jordan Golley and Radyr's Thomas Davies both on 160.

Superb weather conditions appeared the order of the day at Pontypridd with blue skies and sunshine. However a rather testing easterly wind soon made conditions difficult and with some "interesting" pin positions Ponty proved a good test of golf - too good for some. Early starters had the best of it and the overall winner, Pennard's Ollie Dickson made the most of things to set a target of 74 that was to prove unbeatable on the day. With Pyle's Bradley Young one shot further back the pair shared the Best Nett and Best Gross prizes in the senior division.
Jack Longden (Langland Bay) took the honours in the junior (U-16) division with a 79 with Whitchurch junior Joseph Hill a shot further back on 80. Best nett prize in the division went to Jack Whelpton of the home club with 83 - 10 = 73 with Jack Longden second.
As is often the case the U-14 division gave the "fireworks" with Vale of Glamorgan's Sam Baker returning an 86 off 22 to take best nett with a 64, home player Jamie Pickering just losing out with a nett 65 off 14. There was some consolation for Jamie as his 79 won second gross, again being pipped by one as Pennard's Tom Radcliffe had a fine 78.
The course was in really outstanding condition and it proved a stiff but fair test. The club's hospitality was, as always second to none as exemplified by the club captain Alan Richards giving up his day to present the prizes (but again he "stars" in all the pictures).

Again players from the Vale of Glamorgan enjoyed considerable success at the Junior Championship meeting with Lewys Bishop taking the Senior Division and the Junior Championship and Ryan Thomas winning the U-16 Division. Radyr's James Grainger won the U-14 Division.
The event was held at the Rhondda Golf Club for the first time as part of the Club Centenary celebrations. Unfortunately the weather decided to take a turn for the worse and conditions were testing with low cloud and drizzle in the morning and wind (merely a breeze to locals) in the afternoon. Mountain courses are very much a part of the Welsh golfing scene and, just as links courses, do provide a stern examination in conditions like those on Wednesday. The Club were excellent hosts providing a course in top class condition, excellent facilities, even providing a minibus to transport players to the 10th tee.
Whilst scores in the 80's were the norm there were fourteen rounds in the 70's with four 74's, Delon Hau (Vale), Alex Matthews (Cardiff) Nathan Chilcott (Southerndown) and Rhys Carhart (Mountain Ash) leading the way.. James Grainger (Radyr) with a 77 lead the U-14 Division and his nett score of 66 was also best of round. Jack Hoskins (Ridgeway) had a remarkable round, returning 7 over with a 6, 7 and a 9 (all on par 4's) on it, he scored 3 under for the four par 3's and had 5 birdies in all

The drizzle gave way to a wind providing a different test with the water hazards proving very much in play. With a dozen or so players on 78 or better the Championship was still wide open. Whilst those on 74 were favourites the slightest slip would let in the chasers.
So it proved with Lewys Bishop (Vale of Glamorgan) returning a 73, the low round of the day, which gave him a Championship-winning total of 149. This was one shot better than Alex Baker (Vale of Glamorgan) who followed his 76 with a 74 for 150. Ryan Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan) was two shots back on 152 (78 / 74). James Grainger again was best of the Under 14's with a 79. Winning both morning and afternoon best gross in the Divison sahowed a consistency that belied his 11 handicap.
