Junior Championship 2010 July 7th Rhondda Golf Club

( for both morning and afternoon rounds the CSS was 72)

Again players from the Vale of Glamorgan enjoyed considerable success at the Junior Championship meeting with Lewys Bishop taking the Senior Division and the Junior Championship and Ryan Thomas winning the U-16 Division. Radyr's James Grainger won the U-14 Division.

The event was held at the Rhondda Golf Club for the first time as part of the Club Centenary celebrations. Unfortunately the weather decided to take a turn for the worse and conditions were testing with low cloud and drizzle in the morning and wind (merely a breeze to locals) in the afternoon. Mountain courses are very much a part of the Welsh golfing scene and, just as links courses, do provide a stern examination in conditions like those on Wednesday. The Club were excellent hosts providing a course in top class condition, excellent facilities, even providing a minibus to transport players to the 10th tee.

Morning Round

Whilst scores in the 80's were the norm there were fourteen rounds in the 70's with four 74's, Delon Hau (Vale), Alex Matthews (Cardiff) Nathan Chilcott (Southerndown) and Rhys Carhart (Mountain Ash) leading the way.. James Grainger (Radyr) with a 77 lead the U-14 Division and his nett score of 66 was also best of round. Jack Hoskins (Ridgeway) had a remarkable round, returning 7 over with a 6, 7 and a 9 (all on par 4's) on it, he scored 3 under for the four par 3's and had 5 birdies in all

Afternoon Round

The drizzle gave way to a wind providing a different test with the water hazards proving very much in play. With a dozen or so players on 78 or better the Championship was still wide open. Whilst those on 74 were favourites the slightest slip would let in the chasers.

So it proved with Lewys Bishop (Vale of Glamorgan) returning a 73, the low round of the day, which gave him a Championship-winning total of 149. This was one shot better than Alex Baker (Vale of Glamorgan) who followed his 76 with a 74 for 150. Ryan Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan) was two shots back on 152 (78 / 74). James Grainger again was best of the Under 14's with a 79. Winning both morning and afternoon best gross in the Divison sahowed a consistency that belied his 11 handicap.

Spring Meeting 2010 April 8th The Grove Golf Club

Two Vale of Glamorgan team-mates from the U/16 division took the honours in the Spring meeting held at the Grove Golf Club. With a round of 72 from Ryan Thomas just pipped Delon Hau by one shot, with two U/18 players Cardiff team-mates Oliver Baker and Tom Bowen one shot further back.

Somewhat unusually all 6 Nett prizewinners returned the same score - nett 68.

With a coolish wind the Grove proved a tough test as the CSS of 71 (up 1) shows. As always the Club provided excellent facilities both on and off the course for the entry of over 100 players.

Under 18 Division Oliver, with the better back 9 took the Division gross prize. With a fine 76 off 8 handicap Clyne's Thomas Joseph just shaded Langland's Benjamin Gorvett for the Nett prize. Both players having nett 68's but Thomas' back 9 of 32 proved decisive

Under 16 Division

Ryan and Delon took the Gross honours in this division. That Ryan also took the Division Nett prize

is testament to the quality of the round. With an 83 off 15 handicap Lloyd Elliot (Llantrisant & Pontyclun) just lost out on the back 9 to Ryan.

Under 14 Division

Tim Harry (Vale of Glamorgan) again showed why he is regarded as a player of promise returning a gross 77 to win the Division gross prize with 4 shots to spare over Whitchurch player Joseph Hill.

Ridgeway's Max Baker took the nett prize with an 82 off 14 handicap with Pyle & Kenfig's Cameron Morris (91 off 23) again losing out on the back 9.
