With all players finding the Glynneath course tight and requiring local knowledge, the match against Brecon & Radnor was not as one-sided as the 8 - 2 score suggests.
County Champion Ian Henderson finally got a cushion against Gwynfor Evans and won 4/3 but David Lyndon Jones found the going tough against his opponent and in the end finished 1 down. In the next two games Dennis Davies and Herbie Herbert were taken to the 17th and 18th but held on for wins. Geoff Ellis always had the better of his opponent, winning 5/4 but an out-of-sorts Bryn Rees struggled against former Radyr player Roger Gant and lost 4/3. The remaining matches all went Glamorgan's way. The weather closed in towards the end but all agreed that Glynneath had provided a good but fair test.
Individual Results:
The Seniors' side, normally almost as reliable as the U/14 side, suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of a strong Gwent team at Rodgerstone. We played like our Olympic Judo Squad, they played like our cyclists. There were no excuses (and no hiding places either) the Gwent side played good golf and, with few exceptions (David Lyndon Jones being our only winner), we didn't. In the circumstances the team got what it deserved - a thorough going-over.
If ever a team got a wake-up call before an important game this was it. Looking for some crumbs of comfort, there are two consolations:
1. The team collectively will not turn in such a lack-lustre performance again and
2. Such defeats are often cathartic and hopefully this one will not be an exception.
The individual results only emphasise the magnitude of the defeat:
